The foreigners present in Italy at the beginning of 2011 numbered five million and four hundred thousand. This year ISMU has again documented the situation, now more consolidated than ever, with data regarding the main characteristics of this growing population. In examining the immigration phenomenon attention has been given to certain events that characterised 2011, such as the Arab Spring, which caused new migrations from North Africa towards Italy and Europe, and the continuing economic crisis that most heavily affects the poorer brackets of the population, including immigrants. Consideration is given to specific areas of particular importance, such as labour, educations, laws, and other phenomena such as the foreigners' access to credit and the complex relationship between politics and immigration.
