After exploring the Far East, the emerging scenario of East Europe and the problematic territories of the Middle East and Africa, the Fondazione Fotografia now investigates the Indian subcontinent and South America, two important and only apparently distant realities. The latest purchases of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena international collection of contemporary photography offer an overview of the most dynamic and interesting figures in two geographical areas now characterized by extraordinary economic growth and a veritable explosion of artistic creativity. Distinguished by a pure feeling that places the individual at the centre of the world, the work of Indian and South American artists shares a close relationship with a history of traditions and rituals as well as a burdensome colonial legacy against the background of bountiful but pitiless nature. Photography is still for many of them an art of immediacy and instinct. Though worlds apart geographically, the two areas display evident thematic and formal similarities in this artistic juxtaposition. Particularly skilled in tackling subjects of an often crucial and painful nature, they reveal the uncommon ability to capture ideas and emotions in the form of images with the utmost delicacy. The works presented here thus appear capable of attenuating the artistic and cultural differences and bridging the physical distance between the two places. Through them, India and South America meet ideally on the tenth parallel north.
