The book collects the contributes of the speakers and the participants at the Conference "Urban containment. The Italian approach" (Brescia, 8th May 2008). At the Conference, the Italian data and figures in urban growth have been illustrated to assess the National and regional approaches to urban containment. Three main sessions dealt with the interactions between urban dynamics and land use; urban growth and environmental concerns; urban development and local financing (namely land property taxation and transferable development rights). Every session with invited Italian experts had a foreign discussant, with the aim of distinguish between approaches that are context dependent and approaches with a more universal character.
