Humans exchange information within the world (artificial or not) through their senses. Many studies show that the signals coming through the primitive senses (sight, hearing, etc) are then processed by our brain, creating meanings and knowledge. Also aesthetic emotion is the result of an internal processing by our brain, and studies are going on to examine the nature and the characteristics of the stimuli able to raise aesthetic emotion. Neuroaesthetics, this is the name of such new discipline, analyses many artistic phenomena deeply, such as painting, sculpture, but literature is completely neglected. Here we try to explore the possibility of applying the principles of neuroaesthetics to literature, results should be considered just a preliminary suggestion, not solid and mature. In doing such exploration, we introduce the use of various non-conventional conceptual tools for literary analysis, such as formal grammars or Petri nets, suitable to find hidden structures. We start from the studies of V.Ramachandran and S.Zeki, and in particular refer to the ten aesthetic principles suggested by V. Ramachandran. The text introduces the principles of perception, discusses the approach of neuroaesthetics, presents each of the ten principles examined from the point of view of literary analysis, with examples taken from worldwide literature and poetry. Some preliminary notes are added in a first annex, referring to the possibility of applying those neuroaesthetics principles to the analysis of music. An essay on the Syntax of Communication by Anna Maria Fattore follows in a second annex. Two final annexes provide a minimal explanation on Petri Nets and Formal Grammars. Marco Maiocchi - Physicist and designer. entrepreneur. professor at Polytechnic of Milan, chairman of TEAnO and of OPDIPO. He wrote many books and scientific papers on Software Engineering, Software Quality, Management and Design in a broad sense.
