The materials collected in this publication represent the contribution and the projects worked out during or following the 13th International Design Seminar "Urban Culture and Landscape Renewal". The Seminar is a School of Excellence, in which quality of design will become expression of the awareness to combine global issue with local identity and with history. The theme of the renewal of the territory, that includes aspects of city planning and local identity, has a primary importance for the contemporary town, characterized by a greater awareness about the integration among infrastructures, landscape, townscape and pre-existing settlements. After a long cooperation of more than 10 years and previous editions in Pavia (Italy), Zakynthos (Greece), Salvador Bahia (Brasil), Shanghai (China), Al Ain (United Arab Emirates), this year the IUSS Pavia - Institute for Advanced Study and the Università degli Studi di Pavia have co-organized the Seminar in Lucca: it took place from the 26th of August to the 8th of September 2007. The format of the seminar, truly saccessfully experimented during the prevous editions, provides for lessons, workshop in multinational groups, revisions with visiting professors and authorities.
