The international research project and the workshop, the results of which are presented in this volume, were developed in a partnership between the Provincial Council of Genoa and the Department of Economy and Quantitative Methods of the University of Genoa. The purpose was analyse the various possible strategies for improving and consolidating the relationships between the development of ports and the social-economic growth of the territories hosting them. The research project was performed by a multidisciplinary workgroup and assembled economists, geographers, town planners and jurists around a common goal, in order to examine from an integrated point of view the most relevant aspects of the issue. During the last twenty years, the transport industry has been subject to an exponential growth in both the throughput and the productivity of ports, as a result of the global reorganisation of industrial activities which began in the late Sixties and the Seventies, following the farreaching geographical changes in the raw material markets and in consumption patterns.
